The 7-Eleven Quick Check-Out (QCO) system is an advanced self-checkout solution that streamlines transactions using cutting-edge image processing and smart scale technology. By automatically identifying products without manual barcode scanning. QCO accelerates checkout, increases customer throughput, and reduces wait times.
When customers place multiple items on the QCO scale, integrated imaging depth sensors instantly recognise each product, eliminating the need for individual scanning. This automation not only enhances speed and efficiency but also allows store clerks to focus on higher-value tasks, improving overall store operations.
With an intuitive, user-friendly interface that requires no prior instruction, QCO ensures effortless adoption for busy shoppers. By effortlessly combining convenience and innovation, it enhances the shopping journey, delivering faster service while reinforcing 7-Eleven’s commitment to efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Our design team conducted extensive mock-up staging rounds to optimise the system’s ergonomics. Over 3.5 years of development, the QCO underwent multiple full-scale mock ups and engineering iterations, incorporating real-world testing and user feedback to refine its final form. Ergonomics were improved based on user input and store flow, resulting in a more efficient layout.
Additionally, the unit’s size was nearly halved, optimising space without compromising the user experience. Designed for inclusivity, QCO meets ADA compliance, ensuring accessibility for all customers and a seamless checkout process.
The QCO’s 3D camera system is strategically positioned to accurately detect and identify objects on the scale, ensuring that no items are missed or misread. The smart scale cross-references the total weight with visual data from the optical system to enhance transaction accuracy. This placement is thoughtfully designed to align with users’ natural ergonomics, ensuring that technical requirements seamlessly integrate into the user experience without disruption.
Testing of QCO revealed a key insight: maintaining open space between customers and clerks is essential for smooth operations, enabling clerks to easily access items on the scale from behind the counter when troubleshooting. Given the typical store layout, where clerks remain behind the counter and customers in front, QCO was designed to facilitate seamless interaction when needed.
Additionally, our analysis of existing self-checkout systems highlighted that a linear layout—left to right or right to left, depending on store design—optimises efficiency and user flow. The QCO’s form factor supports this by ensuring an open, unobstructed space where customers can naturally place items on the scale and interact with the Point of Sale system.
To improve performance, a hood design was introduced to minimise imaging errors caused by varying lighting conditions, ensuring the unit can be placed anywhere in the store. The heavy computer components are positioned in the back column of the unit to maintain a balanced weight distribution, preventing the unit from becoming front-heavy. This positioning also provides easy access to tech services while remaining hidden from customers, enhancing user-friendliness.
To mitigate potential errors, the design also considers real-world scenarios. A liquid drainage guide allows spills to exit the unit easily, simplifying cleanup and maintaining functionality. Additionally, the structure ensures that if a tall object tips over, it won’t impact or obstruct the camera, preserving system reliability and performance.
Throughout development, we continuously explored ways to enhance performance through software, hardware, and design refinements. Collaborating closely with the software team, we optimised sensor accuracy by incorporating a visual pattern that reduced false readings and sped up checkouts.
The final design features a sleek, bead-blast metallic finish with a dark, matte colour scheme that highlights key interaction points while conveying a modern, high-tech aesthetic. This thoughtful integration of function and form ensures QCO delivers both exceptional usability and a refined, professional presence in any store environment.
In conclusion, the 7-Eleven Quick Check-Out system represents a significant step forward in retail automation, offering a seamless, efficient, and sustainable shopping experience. By merging advanced technology with smart design, QCO improves transaction accuracy and streamlines operations. Its intuitive interface ensures a faster, more convenient process for both customers and clerks, solidifying 7-Eleven’s role as a leader in modern retail.
