Aria is a reusable autoinjector designed for assisting patients in taking self-injectable medications safely and easily. It has a small form factor to facilitate both storing and portability while also providing a comfortable handling experience. The medication is provided in a disposable cassette that contains a standard prefilled syringe with integrated needle. The cassette shields the needle after the injection.
Aria is meticulously designed to offer patients a friendly, discreet, and non-stigmatizing solution for taking their medication correctly. The focus has been to create a device that is intuitive to use, easy and comfortable to hold and not medical-looking, seamlessly integrating into patients’ daily lives.
The user interface is kept simple to minimize information overload, and with the key indicator encompassing the top of the device to make it easier to see when a dose has been correctly injected.
When a patient needs to perform an injection, the cassette is simply inserted into the reusable auto injector.
Aria automatically turns on, locks the cassette in place and unlocks the cassette cap ready for removal. The patient can then remove the cap and the device is ready for injection. The needle remains hidden behind a needle shield to accommodate users with needle phobia. When the front of the cassette is pushed against the injection site, the device starts injecting the full content of the cassette. Clear audible and visual signals tell the patient when the injection has been performed successfully and – crucially, if there have been any problems or failures with the injection such as an incomplete injection, which is a common self-injection failure mode.
After the injection, the needle shield re-covers the needle and locks in place for safe disposal.
Sustainability has been a key topic in the design process. Injections are often performed with fully disposable devices, resulting in significant waste. However, Aria comprises a reusable device with a lifetime of 3 years, combined with a disposable cassette with minimum material content needed for protection of the medication and the needle. All plastic components of the cassette are made of polypropylene to facilitate recycling.
Aria’s connectivity-enabled option can provide real-time data on the injection process, which, in conjunction with cloud-based solutions, can offer potential benefits to patients, HCPs, Pharma and the wider healthcare ecosystem.
