The design of the new ButterflyMX video intercoms creates a new icon for the brand, balancing an approachable and inviting form language with durability and a precision fit and finish. The PENSA team of designers and engineers worked side-by-side with the ButterflyMX development teams to ensure that the concept vision was maintained while adhering to the challenging product requirements.
The units are easy to install on a variety of architectures and building facade materials. Iterative ideation and prototyping led to forms, materials, and assemblies that also provide for an intuitive use experience and solve for the rigors of an outdoor environment, such as waterproofing and heat dissipation.
Beautiful design is often a result of resolving conflicting criteria or requirements. Driving the design of the ButterflyMX intercom were core brand values, including simplicity and a warm, inviting experience. So, careful consideration was given to maintaining the vision of the seamless, elegant, and sculptural form of the exterior while meeting and exceeding the specific requirements for waterproofing, heat dissipation, ease of mounting, installation, and maintenance.
Many iterations and rounds of testing went into the development of an ingeniously simple assembly, using the cast aluminum housing for heat dissipation as well as an extremely durable case. The clever glass and gasket assembly creates a waterproof exterior with no visible fasteners for attachments. Hidden behind the soft angled form of the exterior is key access for mounting and maintenance.
