“Am I staying on top of my hydration?” It is a key question for every athlete.
Staying hydrated is particularly crucial for performance athletes due to the intense physical
activity and higher fluid loss through sweat. Proper hydration can significantly impact athletic performance, endurance, and overall well-being. A proper hydration strategy is essential to performance and should include pre-activity hydration, appropriate fluid intake during a workout, and post-exercise rehydration.
Beyond athletic performance, chronic dehydration can contribute to a wide range of medical
complications. Maintaining proper hydration is essential to support overall health and prevent chronic health issues. Over 75% of Americans are considered chronically dehydrated according to healthy living guidelines.
To maintain proper hydration, it is generally recommended to drink an adequate amount of
water throughout the day and be mindful of fluid intake, particularly in situations where fluid loss is increased (e.g., during exercise or in hot weather). Establishing healthy hydration habits can contribute to better overall health and well-being at any level of physical activity and at any age.
