Freewire’s new Pro Series is an ultrafast eV Charger with versatile input options and a massive integrated battery system for high-throughput charging.
We were asked to redesign our previous highly successful design of the first BoostCharger to include updated manufacturing details, improve cable management, water proofing and air ventilation, updated UI interface, providing an updated appearance while carrying over existing branded elements from the first BoostCharger, all while keeping cost reduction, efficiency and accessibility in mind.
Focus of the Pro Charger redesign was on the overhang and cable management integration and increased usability as well as accessibility for service to all inner components and batteries from 5 sides. The overhang houses not only key technical components while providing for cabling, and lighting.
The target audience is to provide a solution to power Retail, Fleet and Utility customers to achieve their eV charging goals. Businesses can use the energy stored in Freewire’s integrated battery not only for more reliable eV charging but to lower electricity costs or remain operational when the grid is down and generate new revenue. The new Pro Series are more than just chargers, they are comprehensive energy solutions.
Cable strain access points are crucial to maneuver the heavy stiff liquid-cooled cable as easy as possible to reach any eV charge port located around a vehicle. A cable length of 13 feet was identified as ideal to be able to reach any eV charge port while avoiding dragging or touching the ground by the cable. Maximum accessibility to all inner components and the Power Cube is provides through 5-sided access.
Accessibility is not only provided through the 4 sides of the cabinet including the entire front cover hinging like a door. It is also provided by a hinging top cover providing additional access directly from the top.
The additional lighting is a key factor for visibility and showing status lights from a distance and up close. The new UI screen design simplifies and clearly displays charging status of CHAdeMO and CCS which can be used in parallel.
The new appearance provides a new iconic look while maintaining the established branded experience. Further the design allows for easy upgrading and customization with co-branded partners as well as separating out models like “Boost Charger Pro” and “Boost Power Pro.”
