GUS is an LED “wrap” fixture, meaning it directs some light upward and most light downward for glare-free, even illumination. GUS is primarily used to illuminate the interior of commercial buildings—oftentimes schools. Sustainability was a primary focus in the design of GUS, as evidenced by careful choices in materials, size reduction, and packaging. GUS accomplishes its sustainable directives whilst preserving a modern look and boasting an ideal user experience. The structural core of GUS is galvanized steel.
The steel is recyclable and durable enough that a secondary material coating is not needed. Restricting metal use to the structural frame results in less steel consumption and an overall lighter fixture. The metal core creates the durability the brand’s products are known for, passes electrical safety requirements, and allows for the decorative top housing to be made from a new environmentally friendly bioplastic—composed with ground shell and hemp. GUS was designed to be as compact as possible.
The fixture is 50% smaller than the product it replaces and uses 50% less aluminum. GUS is a pivotal member of the brand’s catalog; helping to reduce the company’s overall carbon footprint. By decreasing overall product size and weight, less resources are needed in manufacturing and shipping. On average, the company’s new products are 43% smaller and 42% lighter than previous generations. Per year, this saves 85 tons of CO2, and 2130 tons of aluminum—enough material to produce 30 Bowing-747 planes!
To further reduce product SKUs, GUS is field-adjustable; a single product can meet a wider variety of consumer needs. In efforts to use more sustainable packaging, GUS is shipped with recycled cardboard boxes, pulp and composite fillers, and nonwoven, bamboo fiber fabric sleeves. GUS’s packaging contains no EPE foam or plastic bags. Because GUS is smaller than other wrap lights, GUS can be shipped in a smaller package (ergo, using less packaging material). More product can be shipped per container, and thus transported more efficiently.
As a finishing detail, GUS’s paperless installation instructions are accessed digitally, via QR code. The same care and consideration given to sustainability was given to the user experience of GUS. With a living hinge on one side of the fixture, technicians can open the product for easy wiring access, without any cumbersome loose parts. GUS’s simplified install process has less steps than competitors and can be completed faster—saving headaches and labor costs.
