Home’ is an installation that provides travelers with an opportunity to delve deeper into the world of one of Florida’s most iconic animals—the flamingo. This immersive exhibit creates the illusion of being underwater with the flamingo as it goes about its search for food. The larger-than-life scale of this pink bird transports observers into its realm, serving as a poignant reminder that we all inhabit the same home.
While the flamingo is a widely recognized symbol of Florida, recent research has challenged the notion that these birds are non-native to the region. HOME seeks to shed light on the true origins of these creatures, bringing their story back into the public consciousness.
Constructed from fiberglass, resin, and foam, with an internal steel armature, HOME’s intricate form is shaped through 3D modeling and CNC cutting of foam. Fiberglass matting, impregnated with resin, is then meticulously applied to the foam to create the overall structure. The surface is expertly sanded and painted to achieve the final, lifelike appearance.
‘Home’ invites travelers into an immersive experience where the floor-to-ceiling installation simulates an underwater environment, with dappled light on the bird and floor. Visitors find themselves surrounded by changing lights, offering the perfect backdrop for photos and creating a whimsical and otherworldly atmosphere.
Located prominently in the central terminal, HOME aims to make local wildlife and their habitats the central narrative of the airport. The installation features rippled mirror ceilings and water-light projectors, transporting viewers underwater and immersing them in the home of an oversized flamingo on the quest for sustenance. By placing Florida’s non-human residents at the forefront, HOME encourages both joyous interaction and contemplative experiences, fostering a deeper connection with the natural world that often becomes an afterthought in our busy lives.
