The HP 14 Laptop PC Eco Edition is a special laptop meant for students, and hybrid workers, with an acute focus on sustainability. Part of what makes it special is the intense focus on increasing sustainable materials and performance while keeping the price affordable.
Users want an affordable, well-designed laptop that meets their needs, both for pricing and features. But they also want the reassurance of buying products that are made responsibly.
The first thing a user touches when they receive this computer is the box made from recycled pulp. The packaging contains zero plastics. There are no bags wrapping the computer, power supply, or cables. The inside has these words printed to greet the user:
“Thanks for joining us in our commitment to the Planet by making better choices in everything that we do. We use reclaimed and fewer materials to make an incredibly simple product and recyclable and reusable packaging. Thank you for making a difference.”
The large, 14” with high-resolution QHD panel makes it easy to see all their work or watch movies in 4k. The Intel Raptor Lake P-series CPU provides high performance at low 28-watt power demand. The full HD webcam has two microphones, an IR LED and IR camera, which enables Windows Hello, the ability to unlock the computer by facial recognition. The 41-watt-hour battery lasts all day, so users can work and play without limits.
The sustainable packaging creates a good first impression and sets the tone for the user’s relationship to the product over its useful life. Every touchable surface and most internal parts have been made sustainably.
Recycled aluminum, EPS, food oil & plastic (to call out each material in a separate box: a cover made with recycled aluminum, a keyboard made with EPS (white foam plastic), a cover made with waste food oil) Easy access HP spare parts globally (or designed for disassembly, ease of serviceability). Backpack and mouse bundled.
Each major component of the computer is reclaimed:
Bio-based polycarbonate from waste food oil forms the screen frame.
Waste food oil was taken, purified, and made into a bio-based polycarbonate alloyed with 21% plastic to make the screen bezel. Reclaimed aluminum forms the display back.
Expanded polystyrene from the ocean forms the key scissors.
Post-consumer recycled aluminum forms the palmrest and keyboard surround. The keycaps are made from recycled DVDs. The bottom of the laptop is made from soft ABS made from post-consumer recycled material.
And that would be fine if it were just sustainably packaged and made from responsibly recycled material. However HP designers wanted to extend the life of the machine for the user. The laptop is intentionally easy to open and easy to service. Spare parts are available globally. It was designed for easy disassembly and reassembly.
The 14” HP Laptop PC Eco Edition is available in verdigris green or waterfall blue, using 50% PCR, 50% reclaimed aluminum, and 9% bio-based resin, making it the newest addition to HP’s goal of having the most sustainable product line, ever.
