The design was developed after a prolonged search for a table of similar shape and dimension proved fruitless. The elliptical form provides a centering element to a geometrically irregular room. As with a circular table, the form fosters a sense of social inclusion and focus.
The major axis of the ellipse is centered on a fireplace and allows all but one seat at the table to see the fire and experience its warmth during the winter months.
The monolithic slab of the tabletop, made from reclaimed Bubinga wood, contrasts with the visually active, blackened-steel supports. The blackened steel of the legs and the base are finished with a wax patina. The supports are recessed from the table edge, allowing diners to have ample leg room. The shape of the steel base reflects the street pattern of the surrounding city. The base sits atop a half-inch thick black felt pad.
