Pathlight School (Tampines), a six 6-storey institutional building was designed to foster independence for children on the Autism spectrum, integrating both educational and community spaces. This inclusive design features shared areas like a café and handicraft shop as well as communal event spaces within landscaped forecourts and gardens, which are accessible by both students from neighbourhood residents and students from an adjacent school, emphasizing a collaborative environment.
The school’s design responds to the compact site by incorporating interlocking landscaped areas that soften the building’s massing, inspired by Swiss Psychologist Jean Piaget’s concept of building blocks symbolising social development. The design promotes a sense of connection between spaces and the surrounding community.
Facilities are organised according to sensory needs: high-stimulus areas, such as the café and arts studios, are on lower floors, while quiet academic classrooms are located in a separate block to minimise distractions. Transition spaces like gardens and courtyards facilitate a seamless shift between activity types, supporting both learning and social interactions.
The design emphasises collaboration with the neighbouring school, featuring pedestrian access gates along the shared boundary to encourage interaction between students. This connection extends to recreational facilities, including a multi-purpose hall, sheltered basketball courts, and a perimeter running track that promote shared experiences.
Warm natural colours and tactile materials like textured concrete walls had been carefully selected to invoke a calming, inclusive atmosphere. Simple zoning minimises sensory overload, while the architecture fosters an environment of collaboration.
Pathlight School (Tampines) Campus is a model of thoughtful design, where education, social connection, and community integration are seamlessly intertwined to support both personal and collective growth.
