Designed by Lucy Kurrein for the United Kingdom-based furniture manufacturer NaughtOne, Pippin is a flexible mobile lounge chair, combining comfort, style, and circular design.
Free of glue and staples, Pippin’s component parts can be individually repaired and replaced to extend the life of the chair or be recycled or reprocessed. While a typical upholstered product for the contract furniture market is constructed of a timber frame built using glue and staples, with cut-foam glued to the exterior, making it difficult to separate the materials at the end of life, Pippin stands out with its ability to be easily dismantled.
All the components of Pippin fit together and come apart like a 3D puzzle. Any piece can be extracted and repaired, replaced, recycled or reprocessed. Changing the specification of the chair is simple: customers can switch between castors or glides and add or remove the handle with simple tools.
Sustainability extends to Pippin’s chair cover. The chair comes with a tailored, zip-on, zip-off cover that is both a unique design feature, as well as an element that extends the life of the chair. For most users, when they see that fabric is wearing, they might be tempted to get rid of the entire product. But with the knowledge that fabric is the first component of upholstered furniture to show signs of wear, NaughtOne incorporated this removable and replaceable cover to extend Pippin’s life considerably.
Pippin’s cradle-to-gate embodied carbon is 103.32 kgCO2e. Cradle-to-gate is the embodied carbon released by a product from the extraction of raw materials up to the point where the product leaves the manufacturing facility.
Last but not least, with Pippin, you can easily pull up a chair anywhere. The low-slung, lightweight, and compact chair sits on wheels and is free from arms, making it simple to move, twist and turn with its convenient strap handle—ideal for bringing people together to connect in a variety of spaces and supporting meaningful interaction. In keeping with NaughtOne’s approach to creating sustainable yet beautiful furniture that can adapt to any environment, Pippin can be customized with a choice of six standard colors for the recyclable, rubberized strap handle, and an almost infinite choice of fabric options.
