it’s electric was founded in 2021 to face an urgent challenge: while dense urban environments across North America were leading the way in setting policy targets to mandate a transition to EVs, no scalable charging solutions existed for the 40 million drivers across the U.S. cities and dense municipalities who don’t have access to a private driveway or garage. If we want all US drivers to have access to electric mobility, we need public charging options where they already park: the curb.
it’s electric is a Brooklyn-based EV charging station owner-operator (CSO), purpose-built for cities. Our mission is to unlock access to clean vehicles for all urban drivers. We harness spare electrical capacity from nearby buildings to deploy low-footprint curbside Level-2 EV chargers. Using a “behind-the-meter” connection to property owners’ electrical panels to access excess power capacity, it’s electric avoids the barrier of grid limitations and the costly, time-consuming process of creating a new utility interconnection. Because of these significant savings, it’s electric takes on the capital, installation, and operations costs without requiring contributions from municipal or property partners. Furthermore, we can afford to deploy in areas that don’t yet have high rates of EV ownership—where utilization will initially be low—thus breaking the chicken-or-the-egg cycle that is currently stifling EV adoption in urban areas.
it’s electric’s “behind-the-meter” connection model saves months of time on engineering and permitting, and allows for complete flexibility where charging infrastructure can be located. As a result, we have brought down installation time from 12-18 months to just two days per charger. Compared to all other chargers that directly connect to the utility and require inter-connection agreements.
In return for hosting an it’s electric charger, host properties receive 20% of the charger’s topline revenue, creating a new passive income stream for them while making it easier for everyone in their community to charge an EV. Property partners include cities, parking authorities, owners of 1-2 family homes, commercial and multifamily residential property owners, schools, and other public institutions.
Additionally, it’s electric chargers are the first in North America to feature a bring-your-own charging cord configuration. Detachable cords not only streamline the charger’s urban footprint; they reduce the maintenance required from damaged cords or cord management components, which are the most frequently broken element of public chargers. This configuration is predominant in European cities and is rapidly expanding as these countries electrify, providing a successful precedent for how urban curbside charging can be accomplished in the U.S. Now, the new SAE J3400 NACS charging hardware standard formally encourages detachable cords to help accelerate the deployment of charging, particularly in cities.
Low cost, rapid installation, and community buy-in make our model inherently scalable and unmatched within the industry. The future is here and it’s electric.
