The project reinterprets the dialogue between the regular grid of the historic city and fields and the sinuous curves of the Po and Dora rivers. The austere shape of the industrial buildings of the former Manifattura is broken apart, opening the new Archival and Cultural Hub to the city and the dynamic flow of people along Via Regio Parco.
The recovered tracks of the old railway junction trace the paths along which the entire project unfolds, leading to the Central Square where the new archives are located. From here, visitors can enjoy an open and flexible experience, exploring spaces such as the Piazza dei Binari, the Corte dell’Acqua, or the Piazza dello Studentato. The journey then continues to the Garden on the Rediscovered Canal, the Educational Forest, and various outdoor activity spaces, including the Sports Garden and the Children’s Tree Library.
Tangible aspects related to energy retrofit align with the goal of requalification and enhanced usability of the heritage and urban context, addressing both buildings and open spaces. This approach underscores the intent to highlight elements tied to historical memory while incorporating features with a strong, innovative architectural character.
The new Manifattura Tabacchi will serve as an experimental hub. Its extensive provision of open-air services for citizens, as well as recreational and social spaces for sports, leisure, and interaction, represents a significant contribution to the well-being and health of users. The new urban landscape offers opportunities for collective cohesion and inclusion, fostering a strong sense of community while enhancing users’ perception of safety.
The objective is to make these spaces accessible not only physically but also culturally, conveying to the community the historical and social value of the complex.
The project aims to create a landscape connection between the urban system and the surrounding natural areas, such as the Po River, nearby parks, and nature reserves. This linkage revitalizes the urban context, establishing a connected and resilient hub designed for everyone. The reconnection between the city and the park is achieved by enhancing elements of historical memory and introducing a new network of pathways immersed in the greenery of the widespread park.
The main path along the river opens into an amphitheater integrated into the landscape, serving as a natural plaza on the Po and an extended oasis connecting the Parco della Confluenza to Parco Pietro Colletta. Linear canals branch out within the area, flanked by trails that start in the urban zone and culminate in panoramic terraces overlooking the river.
The landscape is characterized by an interplay of mineral spaces, equipped plazas, ornamental gardens with shrubs and grasses, rain gardens, and tree islands, restoring habitat continuity through ecological corridors that link the project area to natural zones.
