The Santorini was designed to bring aspirational, iconic design and luxurious nursery elegance to families at a price point that is conscious of the economic pressures facing families today. Born as a hand-drawn sketch on a napkin, Storkcraft’s very own Justin L. Segal (Vice President, Product & Brand) conceptualized the Santorini crib after admiring landscapes and architecture while vacationing with his pregnant wife. Today, Justin’s daughter, Rafaela, sleeps in the Santorini crib that her father designed specially for her.
The Santorini embodies the juxtaposition of light, airy, minimalist design and safe, substantial nursery craftsmanship. Justin brought the Santorini to life with the purpose-driven mission to give families an iconic crib at a price point that would not force them to sacrifice their entire budget. Furthermore, the Santorini is much more than a crib, as it was designed to serve families well beyond babyhood.
With prolonged, real-life use in mind, the Santorini is equipped with a proprietary toddler safety guardrail – allowing families to transform the Santorini crib into an equally stunning toddler bed. The Santorini is far from “disposable furniture”, as it is able to transform from an elegant crib into a toddler bed, daybed, and even into a gorgeous full bed.
The Santorini blends opposing design principles, harmonizing them together in one magnificent crib. The Santorini’s defining feature is its elegantly curved base, which is accentuated most in its two-tone colourways. Where the Santorini’s base meets its body, families are treated to a mirroring of curves. Justin chose to keep the Santorini open on all sides (no solid panels on any side of the crib) and utilize classic, rounded dowels (as opposed to flat slats) to provide the Santorini with a light and airy feeling – like a sunny, tranquil day in Santorini, Greece. Despite its airiness, the Santorini is substantial to personify safety.
Justin did not want the enjoyment and use of the Santorini to end once the child has outgrown their crib. Thus, the Santorini was designed to carry its elegance into four additional stages: as a toddler bed (and, Justin included a proprietary, matching toddler safety guardrail with the Santorini crib so families could be ready to transform the Santorini crib into a toddler bed without an additional purchase); as a daybed; as a full bed, with a headboard only; and as a full bed, with both a headboard and a footboard, depending on a family’s taste. With its 5-in-1 convertibility, the Santorini aims to put a stop to disposable furniture.
Typically, a crib of a comparable aesthetic to the Santorini would command a price well above $1,000 USD. However, the Santorini brings this iconic, aspirational aesthetic to families who simply cannot afford to spend this amount on a crib. And, beyond the Santorini’s iconic aesthetic, it is GREENGUARD Gold Certified – meaning, it has been tested for over 10,000 chemicals and volatile organic compounds, to ensure cleaner air in the nursery. The Santorini has garnered media attention (with a 2024 feature in Forbes), the “#1 New Release in Cribs” badge on Amazon.com, and was named a finalist in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards.
So much more than just a baby crib, the Santorini’s 5-in-1 “grow with me” convertibility embodies Storkcraft’s corporate mission to combat the trend of “disposable furniture”. The Santorini represents Storkcraft’s promise to keep cribs out of landfills by focusing on crafting furniture that is usable well beyond the baby years – convertible baby cribs, capable of serving families well into toddlerhood, childhood, and into the teen years. The Santorini is crafted with sustainable New Zealand pine wood, and is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL). The Santorini is an elegantly designed chameleon, adapting to the child.
