The Atreeum office building on Hanauer Landstrasse in Frankfurt is located in a historic commercial area with a perimeter block development of typical brick buildings. The aim is for the new office building to develop out of its surroundings, to fit in contextually and at the same time to create a future-proof, sustainable working environment with a new building structure that integrates nature into the living and working space.
The different existing heights of the surrounding buildings are taken up by differentiated staggered heights. This gives the sculptural structure a stepped height development that creates urban high points at the corners and at the same time enables optimized lighting of the courtyards. These courtyards are connected to the urban space by large two-story passageways.
The building concept is based on the principle of a Moroccan riad, which forms a protective wall on the outside and lively, differentiated green atriums on the inside.
Accordingly, the outer skin of the Atreeum consists of a clinker brick façade with a minimalist opening structure that envelops and protects the building. Inside, the volume dissolves into horizontal layers. The façade is glazed and numerous balconies and roof terraces are oriented towards the inner green spaces and enable the use of these landscaped green areas.
In this respect, these green inner courtyards, balconies, and roof terraces form the significant heart of the building. The roof terraces offer special recreational areas with pavilions and workspaces surrounded by greenery.
A retention and evaporation concept is also integrated into this overall concept, which creates a healthy natural microclimate in the courtyards and inside the building.
In this way, this building can make a contribution to sustainable architecture. The result is a green working oasis in an urban context.
