The Greenhouse is a purpose-built pioneering education and experimental hub for students (aged 11 to 18) to learn, research, experiment, and to ultimately nurture the next generation of innovators, leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers. Relaxation and collaboration are promoted by seamlessly integrating nature into the learning environment.
Notably, The Greenhouse received Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark 2021 Platinum – Zero Energy award, recognizing its outstanding performance in health, wellbeing, intelligence, and maintainability. 2. Unique Identity The unique tilted design of The Greenhouse in Singapore was crafted in response to site challenges, utilizing innovative passive design and new technologies, similar to greenhouses that use technology and scientific innovation to optimize conditions for plants.
Thorough studies confirmed the performance-based design, underscoring the Greenhouse’s dedication to net-zero energy through energy efficiency. The design also focuses on seamlessly integrating nature with the built environment, creating spaces that enhance the learning environment for future green champions. 3. Innovative Design & New Technologies Being surrounded by existing school buildings limited the exposure of The Greenhouse to sunlight. Thus, the form was reimagined with a 10-degree tilted envelope.
This innovative approach aimed to prevent self-shading and maximize exposure for Singapore’s largest assembly of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) panels, covering 1,300m2 from the north façade to the rooftop. These BIPV panels offset 40% of the building’s annual energy consumption, while the remaining 60% is offset by other photovoltaic installations on the campus. The system generates enough renewable energy to power 122 four-room public flats in Singapore or planting 8,600 trees. 4. Product Excellence & Endurance Furthermore, the BIPV envelope of The Greenhouse strikes the perfect balance between efficiency and aesthetics as it mitigates solar gain and contributes to its zero-energy goal.
Student’s outward views are not compromised while BIPV panels collect solar energy and block heat. Additional sustainable features include rainwater harvesting for water conservation, environmentally friendly products such as Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (WELS) 3-tick water fittings, a low Concrete Usage Index design, and upcycled wood. These features minimize the building’s carbon footprint. 5. Energy Efficiency & Sensitivity to the Environment The Greenhouse employs technologies for energy efficiency, including a Passive Displacement Ventilation system and a water-cooled chiller plant.
The roof garden, with biophilic elements and an eco-pond, prioritizes health and well-being. A naturally ventilated terrace features an edible forest, contributing to sustainable plant-based food production, ensuring students collaborate in a learning space that prioritizes the environment. The ravine atrium, with extensive greenery, filters natural light and enhances student productivity and well-being, providing restorative spaces amidst nature.
