With an expanding student body, the University of Nebraska College of Architecture was at a crossroads. Needing to expand its facilities, the college chose to expand out from their existing complex of three buildings that date back to the 19th Century.
This new addition incorporates an existing foundation structure from a formerly demolished part of the complex and strategically integrates with the existing complex to minimize new infrastructure while preserving the historic façades. The design process included four user group engagement forums for faculty, students, and alumni to create a functional, flexible, and sustainable addition.
Critical to the project is the use of mass timber for the structure which is allowing the project to: use local resources, train the local building industry in mass timber systems, provide students and faculty with open and flexible design studios, educate students on mass timber systems.
