The V500 body camera provides video capture for first responders to improve incident safety, transparency and accountability. Combining LTE, WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities the device forms a key building block in the public safety ecosystem, making operations safer and more efficient by leveraging existing video, voice and software investments.
Designers and researchers identified the following design goals as opportunities for Design innovation:
-Integrate a wearable, rugged camera into the officer ecosystem and leverage existing video, voice, and software assets.
-Remove the burden for users to manually activate the camera.
-Provide the incident command center with realtime video feeds.
-Reduce downtime through wireless programming and updates.
-Retain compatibility with universal wearable mount systems.
Designers created a universal wearing system compatible with industry standard Klick Fast mounts. This allows compatibility with systems users are already familiar with. Developers also identified triggers such as radio emergency button activation, vehicle state, proximity to other cameras, or holster draw, any of which automatically initiate camera recording. This integrates video into the user’s ecosystem while reducing complexity and cognitive demand.
LTE capability was added to allow live streaming anywhere without WiFi. Remote observers are able to see what officers see in real time to improve situational awareness, coordinate an effective response and maintain accountability.
Other Key Features:
• A pre-buffer feature gives users two minutes to activate recording if they neglect to do so prior to the start of an incident.
• After an incident users are able to review and tag relevant footage using a mobile phone app to add case notes and more easily organize material. This collaborative device ecosystem keeps officers safe and provides enhanced situational awareness for all users from first responders to command staff to evidence managers.
• Offload over LTE allows the processing of evidence before an officer’s shift has ended. The V500 can offload crucial videos securely, from anywhere with network connectivity.
• Remote Maintenance and Location over LTE allows administrators to change configurations, maintain fleet oversight, and find or disable missing cameras without needing physical access to the camera, which enables users to remain in the field and avoid workflow interruption.
