I created the Luula table from the quiet wisdom of a life lived close to nature – blending thoughtful design, the truthful inspiration of natural wood, and craftsmanship passed down through generations.
Born from the birch forests of Latvia – trees shaped by the rhythm of seasons and the breath of the Baltic Sea – Luula carries the scent of northern stillness and the timelessness of slow living. Into this foundation, I added fragments of my own childhood: the focused joy of long winters, the dreams shaped by wood and wind, and the desire to create something lasting and meaningful for my own children.
What emerged was more than a table – it was a story carved in wood. A sensory, evolving space where creativity, learning, and security meet.
Each LUULA Sensory Play and Learning Table and Chair Set is made from sustainably grown Latvian birch plywood, laminated with an opal white film overlay. This material provides a unique dual benefit: increased resistance to scratching and wear, and a softly reflective surface that enhances the natural wood grain with luminous depth. The result is a tactile, elegant finish that feels both grounded and ethereal – like light resting in forest.
But design is not only how it looks or feels – it is how it works. Luula is built to grow with the child. It offers three height levels, accommodating children from 18 months to 12 years, the moment they naturally transition to adult-sized furniture. This long usability period honours sustainability through longevity and thoughtful adaptation.
Functionality is not an add-on—it is woven into the table’s very DNA. The set includes an openable blackboard that doubles as a writing or drawing surface, a locking safety key for parental peace of mind, and three adjustable heights to support ergonomic growth.
Modular side compartments store art tools, learning aids, or tactile elements, while a clear Plexiglas panel allows for dry-erase drawing or layered storytelling. A built-in paper roll provides clean, continuous creativity, complemented by a variety of learning boards designed to support visual, sensory, and kinesthetic learning styles.
Every feature has a pedagogical intention: to empower children to explore, organise, and express. The raised edge of the tabletop provides a sense of physical boundary and personal space – particularly important for children with attention or sensory sensitivities. Right-side compartments help establish order and rhythm, fostering initiative through environment-based structure.
In inclusive classrooms and neurodiverse homes alike, Luula is already making a difference. Teachers and therapists observe increased engagement, focus, and creative self-direction – not just because of what the table offers, but how it feels: calm, safe, and inviting.
The vertical board elements aid in developing fine motor skills and proper pencil grip, while the white and clear acrylic surfaces create a “third dimension” – a plane where multisensory narratives and play come alive. Children layer materials, draw, and tell stories in space, not just on paper – building understanding through motion, light, and texture.
In 2022, Luula was nominated for the Kind + Jugend Innovation Award, and in 2024, it received the German Design Award: Winner in the Baby & Child category – recognising both its educational impact and its design integrity.
Today, Luula is not just a piece of furniture. It is a companion in early childhood – one that brings light to everyday moments, supports learning through design, and holds space for joy, calm, and imagination.
We dream that this table will continue to serve children around the world – brightening childhoods, supporting learning, and helping build a gentler, wiser future.
Even for children whose childhood has been stolen by war, we hope Luula can offer a moment of peace — a safe space to create, to heal, and to remember what it feels like to simply be a child again. A quiet beginning toward a safer, smarter future.
